My Favourite Moment at Canada Blooms

The big garden show in Toronto called Canada Blooms is like a spring life raft
at the end of our long Canadian winter.

Here is my favourite moment of discovery from the show.

  5. I would love to go to Canada Blooms but it would use up all my vacation funds.
I wonder if they would consider satellite shows across Canada. We have Home and Garden shows but the garden part is really just a token.

    1. Sadly, I don't see Canada Blooms doing any regional expansion in the next few years Susan. The show is much smaller than it was pre-recession. When the economy improves, I think we may see other shows pop up around the country.

  6. Dear Jennifer, the book that I won arrived today. I am so happy. Thank you very much for your kindness, this is a beautiful gift. I also adore your colourful photos of the Canada Blooms. It´s still so cold here in Finland, every night is just freezing, sometimes -20 degrees. I don´t like wintertime, so I am looking forward to spring...hope it´ll come soon!

    1. I am so glad that the book arrived safe and sound. I hope you enjoy reading it. It is not quite -20 degrees here, but winter still has a firm grip on the garden.Hopefully the weather will warm in the next couple of weeks.

  7. HOLY Cow is that gorgeous! The poppies in all of those bottles are simple and stunning! I'm fond of the aged bottles...hmmm I think I will have to look for some when I head to the flea market! Your photos are out of this world Jennifer!

There is nothing quite like those yellow poppies.
    They just feel like summer.

  12. Jennifer - you truly are an artist (to see these gorgeous poppies the way you do) and an excellent photographer to be able to convey their beauty to us.
Hope you had fun at Canada Blooms!
(Did you buy anything? I always end up getting more lily and dahlia bulbs)

    1. Money is tight at the moment so I was more restrained with my purchases than I might have liked to have been. I did by some seeds ( assorted poppies among them!) and a cloche with a glass bird at the top from Kate's Garden.

  16. I love Islandic poppies, I used to grow them in my garden but after a few years they stopped flowering so profusely so out they went...I have often thought about replacing them but never got around to do it, your photos made me decide to finally do it this year!

  21. Jennifer, I was at the show too and can't remember the poppies. Funny how that works - not everyone takes in the same things. Anyway fabulous photos of a really nice collection of poppies.

  22. You have said that SO perfectly: "like a spring life raft at the end of our long Canadian winter!" I love these photos, so soft, yet booming with colour. I really like the background effect you have on the last 3 photos, can I ask what you did to get it?

  23. All the pictures employ a similar technique, but are adjusted to suit each image. I superimpose a texture in Photoshop and use a soft bending mode to make the texture semi-transparent. Then I use the eraser tool with several brush styles and opacities to remove the texture in places. Textures tend to wash out an image. Some people like the soft, faded look, and sometimes I do too, but when the image is colorful, I like to adjust for the fading using Levels under "Image".

  24. I'm normally not a big fan of orange, but these flowers are gorgeous! Of course, your photography is stunning as always, Jennifer. I attended the annual flower show in Chicago last week, and I agree--such shows are a welcome relief this time of year and help to preserve my sanity as I impatiently wait for spring to arrive.

  25. Beautiful! Definitely a welcome break from winter. Just the dose of color I need!

  27. Gorgeous photos, Jennifer! They sure are a welcome sight on another gloomy day. We were there fairly early in the morning, so we missed most of the big crowds. But they were over at the Home Show! Too busy there for my liking.

  28. oh what I would give for a spring show like that. How lucky to be able to visit and see all the sights. I particularly liked the diminuitive ferns gathering at the feet of the poppies.

  29. Wow, the photos are simply stunning and are just what I needed today. I'm growing pretty weary of the white stuff (and I don't mean a flower!) and cold temps. We still have a good foot of snow on the ground. Sounds like it was a wonderful show. Thanks for sharing!
